INSPIRATIONS #18
17 May ’13 The wonderful thing about curating the Back Page is that not only do we get to ask old friends and respected colleagues to participate but it also affords us the opportunity to make new friends.
It gives us an excuse to approach hitherto complete strangers that we admire from afar and ask them to contribute. James Bedell is one such person. He writes a great blog and self publishes his Instagram images on Blurb. We really like his style. Luckily he agreed to be this month’s Back Page.

INSPIRATIONS #17
15 Feb ’13 After a global tour of inspiration, we have come back home to hear the voice of the next generation of UK designers.
Light Collective ‘one to watch’ Joe Vose of Light Bureau bastardises the famous Gil Scott Heron poem from 1970. Joe uses it to graphically explain what inspires and drives him on is the fact that lighting isn’t taken seriously enough and this should change. The title of the poem was originally a popular slogan among the 1960s protest movements in the United States. Watch out; “The revolution will be no re-run brothers...”

INSPIRATIONS #16
13 Dec ’12 For all those Euro and US-centrics out there, guess what? The Mexican lighting design scene is alive and kicking.
This issue we have invited Magali Mendez, a young, upcoming designer from Mexico City and director of her own company, Sáas Lighting, to take over the back page with her inspirations. After collaborating on an event together early this year in (non-other than) Luis Barragan’s House, this is everything we expected from her and then some! Colourful, stylish and full of cultural references... enjoy.

INSPIRATIONS #15
13 Dec ’12 We met Zack at the first Social Light Movement Workshop (which makes him a pioneer straight off) and after being bowled over by his group’s beautiful and super-clever concept story for their design, knew he was one to watch.
It’s really nice to have the opportunity to ask someone young and fresh to the lighting industry to voice what inspires them. We shouldn’t neglect our up-and-coming talent. Zack has recently joined Focus Lighting and is based in NYC. Check out his Tumblr page for more visual loveliness:

INSPIRATIONS #14
12 Dec ’12 This month we invited two of our co-founders from the Social Light Movement, Olsson and Linder, to guest start on the Back Page.
Not known for conforming, these two weird Swedes (and we can say that because we have just spent three days with them in Sweden having the piss taken out of our Englishness) like to buck trends. If you haven’t seen them start a lecture with one of their films – versions of Brokeback Mountain and Rocky – or heard about the kids dance group doing a Lady gaga number at one of their talks then you are missing out big time.
Erik and Joran are on a mission to bring Light to the people that need it most. Working on the forgotten estates of Sweden for them inspiration is born out of frustrations: ‘we simply become angry when we see environments that are designed and built without love. We want something else…’

INSPIRATIONS #13
19 Jun ’12 Ta-Wei Lin is the principal of CMA Lighting and is based in Taiwan. We originally met in Istanbul where he did the best Pecha Kucha we have ever seen. We asked him to be the subject of this months Back Page as he should actually have featured as one of our own inspirations.
He was kind enough to share some of his poetry when we met him last month in Singapore after a sleepless night when he returned to an old project and we were interested to see what his perspective on inspiration would be. He states that he is often inspired by literature and childhood memories: “Poems and sketches unfold these inspirations.” It’s a complete contrast to the energetic explosion from Anne that was featured last month. It’s calm, restrained, quiet and thoughtful. East meets West...
